Stranger’s Wrath

Luckily for us, there were two more executables left to try. And these ones don’t run into any memory issues. Immediately, we’re presented with a previously unknown title for the prototype: Oddworld Stranger: Wrath of the Wild! With the build date being what it is, it is truly interesting to see that the title, too, was still in flux. Towards the top of the screen, you can see some debugging information which is present only on the “Retail” build.

The background of the title screen is actually a .bik video file, which can be viewed with any Bink Video player. It is a short loop of a forest stage, and not necessarily the most interesting thing in the world. But still, that logo! Digging into the files more, it was found that the interface was made using .SWF files which work in most browsers! I actually found a great reference page created by one of the developers, linked here, that talks all about the flash elements, neat stuff! It was quite strange seeing the interfaces loading on a PC, even if they were mostly non-functional. A lot can be said about the interface menus, as they are so incredibly early and crude. Placeholder text, graphics, settings, nearly everything is unfinished. I especially love the handdrawn Xbox, and the wonderfully written credits. More images of the interface can be seen in the Screenshot section.
